BRAND NEW / Brother's Song 対訳と考察

 2、3日前からヘビロテしているBRAND NEWのBrother's Song。初期EMOらしいギターリフを基調としたバラードなんだが、そのあまりにも美メロに感動して対訳を作ってみた。正直、他の曲はあまり好きじゃないけど、この曲が持つリリシズムは良い。

英語自体は簡単だけど曖昧でいてドラマティックな歌詞で、解釈は難しいが面白い。とりあえず、対訳をどうぞ。

未だにこの夏と戦っているんだ

厄介事の原因と火傷した手から

今晩、僕らは飲んでいたんだ

ちょっとした友人たちと
And the girl that my brother likes is finally talking to him
結局、兄貴は好きな女の子と話してた
And his chest is all swelled like he's proud and happy
そして兄貴の胸は大きく膨らむ、まるでその自尊心や幸福感のように
Like he's got a great idea
まるですごいアイデアを思いついたかのように
Like he's making a memory
まるで思い出を作るかのように

起き上がって車の外に出ようぜ
There's an east swell comin
東の方から波が来る
And it's howling off shore and we'll be
沖の方で風が唸っている
Lying like lions out in the sands
まるでライオンのように、砂浜に横たわろう
But I'll be dead before you put a gun in my brother's hands
だけどお前が兄貴の手に銃を渡すより早く死んでやるからな

So we make jokes back at home
家に帰りながら冗談を飛ばす
And we lighten the mood
気分を変えて明るくね
But growing up my parents saw
僕らは成長していたが、両親はわかっていた
What sending a kid to fight can really do
子どもを喧嘩に導くものが何をなしうるのかを

Now with the war I can tell they're a little shook up
今や明白となった争いのため、彼らは少し動転しているようだ
'Cause just a few mother's sons will never really be enough
生まれてきた息子の数は、母にとって決して十分ではないだろう 
Not 'til half of our names are etched out in a wall
姓名の半分を壁に刻み込む寸前まで
And the other half ruined from the things we saw
僕らが見た物事の半分は崩壊した

だけどお前が兄貴の手に銃を渡すより早く死んでやるからな

 かなり曖昧な歌詞なのであるが、サビの最期「But I'll be dead before you put a gun in my brother's hands」でいきなり核心的なフレーズが出てくる。遡って解釈すると、どうやら恐らくこれは恋人をめぐった兄弟喧嘩か何かの物語だろう。

最初の「We still wrestle this summer From the bones of our tired andblistered hands」あたりは現在の目線で、「'Cause tonight we got drinks」は事件当日だろう。そして、サビは恐らくビーチで遊ぶ情景と事件の瞬間だ。「But I'll be dead before you put a gun in my brother's hands」はかなり難しいが、「あなた＝死神」とでも取るのが妥当じゃないかな。恐らく兄は自殺とかな気がするが、さすがに誰かが殺すとかだとちょっとウソっぽすぎる（ウソだろうけどｗ）。「Lying like lions out in the sands」の語呂と情景描写が素敵だ。

その後は親の視点。この辺りは巧みだ。最初、「'Cause just a few mother's sons will never really be enough」あたり何言っているのかさっぱりだったけど、たぶん兄弟の一方が死んだことの遠回しの表現だ。次の「Not 'til half of our names are etched out in a wall」が墓銘を意味するからたぶんあってる。

さあまあこんなとこだろうけど、やっぱこれすごいいい曲ですね。
